On June 14, 2026, an industrial fire at the Lineage Logistics facility in Boyle Heights prompted an immediate environmental health response by Los Angeles Unified School District for District Sites. Recognizing the unique nature of the incident, the District initiated environmental monitoring, coordinated with regulatory agencies and technical experts, and implemented precautionary protective measures at affected school sites.

The information that summarizes the District's response, environmental monitoring efforts, protective actions, and continued collaboration with partner agencies to ensure decisions remain informed by the best available scientific data will be shared here as it becomes available.

LA Unified remains committed to protecting the health and safety of its students and staff through a science-based, and precautionary approach.

LA Unified Current Efforts (As of July 23, 2026)

LA Unified coordinated expeditiously with the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ensure they had access to our school sites to install stationary air monitors to collect data affecting school communities.
Schools in the immediate vicinity of the fire were proactively relocated by LA Unified to ensure the health and safety of the school community.
LA Unified deployed portable air purifiers equipped with both HEPA and activated carbon filtration to address particulate matter and gaseous contaminants. In addition, HVAC filters at affected campuses were replaced on an accelerated schedule to maintain optimal filtration performance.
Collectively, these measures reflect a layered, data-driven response that evolved with field conditions and available environmental information, with the understanding that an industrial fire of this magnitude presents unique and complex challenges.

LA Unified Next Steps (As of July 23, 2026)

LA Unified Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) will be conducting additional environmental assessments, including laboratory analysis of air and surface samples, at schools throughout the Boyle Heights area to evaluate potential impacts associated with the Lineage industrial fire. Preliminary laboratory results are anticipated in early August, prior to the start of the new school year. OEHS will publish the results on this webpage to ensure transparency with the school community.

Environmental Monitoring Data Sources

LA Unified Office of Environmental Health and Safety: monitored for VOCs, particulate matter (PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀), carbon monoxide, methane, hydrogen sulfide, and oxygen.

LACFD HazMat: Conducted handheld real-time monitoring for gases such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen gas, phosphine, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen fluoride, chlorine, methane, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and related compounds.

SCAQMD/EPA: Conducted stationary monitoring for carbon monoxide, ammonia, VOCs, hydrogen fluoride, and particulate matter.

Onterris: Conducted metals analyses by (including arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron oxide, lead, lithium, manganese, nickel, and zinc oxide); VOC monitoring via TO-15.
